Moo-Young serves as the Dean of Cal State LA’s College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology which has five departments, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Technology. Collectively, these departments offer 12 undergraduate programs, four graduate programs and two teaching credentials. The College has 80 faculty and staff service and more than 1,700 engineering, computer science, and technology students. The Dean participates in campus-wide shared governance processes and is a member of the Dean’s Council, Budgeting and Finance Committee, and Rank and Tenure Committee. The Dean is responsible for all operations of the College and the overall leadership and guidance of its academic enterprise, fundraising, budgetary development and oversight, and administration. The College was recently honored by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. as the President’s Award for Diversity.
Dr. Moo-Young served as the Interim Dean of Engineering at Villanova University and also held the role of the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Villanova University. As Interim Dean, I reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and is the chief executive officer of the College of Engineering. Providing effective leadership, management, and mentoring to the College’s faculty and staff, today numbering approximately 100 professionals, is central to the Dean’s charge. Our undergraduate and graduate enrollments are 850 and 350, respectively, he also oversee and mentor 67 faculty. His primary responsibilities included development of the College’s research strategy, policies and practices, as well as leadership of the College’s programs to continuously improve the research infrastructure and expand relationships with governmental and industrial funding agencies. Dr. Moo-Young managed the day to day operations of a $11.0 Million research portfolio including capture management, contracts management, and research program and project implementation. Dr. Moo-Young worked to secure earmarked and competitive federal grants, corporate and private gifts and donations, and foundation grants. Dr. Moo-Young was responsible for developing an intellectual property portfolio, managing and licensing the portfolio, and development of start-up ventures. He is also engaged in economic development activities with the Navy Yard in Philadelphia and Chester Pennsylvania. In addition, Dr. Moo-Young was responsible for the graduate programs and specifically oversees the Management of Technology Master’s Degree Program, Systems Engineering Master’s Degree Program, and the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program.
He is recognized nationally as a leading scholar in Environmental Engineering and Management of Technology. Currently, his primary areas of interest in environmental engineering include hazardous and solid waste management, risk management, and nano-material technology. In the area of Management of Technology, Dr. Moo-Young teaches, consults, and researches in management of technology, technology entrepreneurship, research and development management and strategy development for technology companies. Dr. Moo-Young holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and an M.S. degree from RPI in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He also holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering, majoring in Environmental Engineering, from Morgan State University. He is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and Penn Engineering where he received an Executive Master in Management of Technology. Dr. Moo-Young is also a graduate of the Management Development Program at Harvard University. In addition, Dr. Moo-Young has worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, and Andersen Consulting.
Dr. Moo-Young has received numerous national awards such as the U.S. Black Engineer of the Year, AAAS Science, Technology and Policy Fellowship, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, and General Electric Faculty Fellowship. He has published over 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals, books and conference proceedings, and has delivered over 80 presentations at conferences, workshops and invited lectures. He is also the co-inventor of one patent.
Dr. Moo-Young currently serves as a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board. Dr. Moo-Young is a member of many professional organizations such as American Society of Civil Enginers, and American Chemical Society. Dr. Moo-Young has also developed a engineering, science and technology career awareness program for minority Students from Philadelphia called the VESTED-MENTOR Academy, in the Lehigh Valley a board member of the acclaimed STAR Academy, and currently serves as the PI for the nationally renowned Cal State LA MESA Center.
