HENAAC College Bowl - Professional Frequently Asked Questions
Is the College Bowl like a technical or academic competition?

No, the College Bowl was not created to be an academic or technical design competition. It is intended to be a leadership, professional and career development event designed to bring out the students’ best teambuilding, motivational and interpersonal skills through the competition topics posed and the interactions between the industry representatives and student team members.

What are my responsibilities as a coach or assistant coach?

Industry representatives serve as coaches, assistant coaches or judges. As a coach, your responsibilities include:

  • Be the motivator and leader to a team of ten students and guide them through the competitions
  • Serve as an expert on professional and leadership development topics associated with the competitions by relating your own personal experiences
  • Establish a warm, caring mentor relationship with the ten students
  • Teach your students the importance of teamwork, ethics, and leadership throughout the two-day event

As an assistant coach, you will be helping the coach deliver in his/her role as a motivator, leader and mentor to the team.

What are my responsibilities as a judge?

As a judge, you will be scoring each round of competitions along with other judges. You will be assigned to one of the auditoriums to judge the work of some of the teams as they progress through the competitions. You will be provided with score sheets with guidelines and will need to be consistent with your scoring throughout the entire event. It is also very important that you are available to score all of the rounds of competitions.

Will I be able to see my team compete if I am a judge?

You will not be able to see your own team compete during the College Bowl. The reason for this is that we need to ensure no one team has an advantage over any other.

Will I be able to participate in other HENAAC activities?

You will only be able to participate in HENAAC activities that do not conflict with the required time periods for the College Bowl. You will receive a program with a schedule of the College Bowl events at a later date.

What items should I bring with me for the College Bowl?

We recommend that you bring the following items:

  • Company Banners / Table cloth to dress up your “station” during the draft selection process
  • Giveaways for about 300 students during the draft process
  • Company logo shirts a must for all team members –enough to outfit a ten person team for two days
  • Other company gear for the students – caps, t-shirts, etc.
  • Camera to take pictures of your team
  • Laptop for working with the students during the Resume Competition

Will I need access to a computer during the College Bowl?

Yes you will. You will be working with students on their resumes. We will provide you with an electronic copy of their resume as a starting point. So we highly encourage you to bring a laptop to the College Bowl for this competition or to make arrangements to have access to a computer during this time.

Note: HENAAC will be providing a computer room for use during the competition, but it gets very congested due to the large number of students in the College Bowl using them at once.

What are the College Bowl Special Awards?

Throughout the College Bowl competitions, we will all see students and industry representatives come out of their “shells” and blossom into fun, energetic participants. Special awards will be presented at the Student Leadership Luncheon.

What are key strategies for having a successful team?

Over the years we have seen that successful teams are those where:

  • the students and the coaches quickly form a bond;
  • coaches understand their mentoring and motivator roles;
  • the students enjoy working with each other (team building);
  • team quickly develops its own identity;
  • students feel comfortable in the team and step up into leadership roles; and
  • students focus on having fun, tasks at hand and doing their best and not worry about competitions.
