HENAAC Holds its First STEM-Up™ Middle School Teacher Workshop
A total of eighteen, sixth to eighth grade science and math teachers from Stevenson, Belvedere and Hollenbeck Middle Schools located in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles convened at California State University in Los Angeles (CSULA) for the first STEM-Up™ Teacher Workshop held July 13-17, 2009. Through a partnership between HENAAC and CSULA’s College of Engineering, Computer Science & Technology teachers participate through a series of sessions that provided an overview of how to infuse Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) into their daily curriculum. Teachers had the opportunity to learn about the engineering design approach, and participated in hands-on activities that they can integrate in their respective classes for projects to motivate students to pursue careers in STEM. The STEM-Up™ Teacher Workshop is just one of the many opportunities that will be available through the initiative, which targets the Boyle Heights Community and 18 schools in the area.
