Engineer II, Engineering Mechanics Group
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Featured: 05-05-2008 thru 05-11-2008

Consuelo Guzman-Leong is currently a task leader on the Anti-foam Agent Gas Retention and Release Tests in support of the Waste Treatment Plant.  She is part of a large, multi-disciplinary team working on behalf of the Department of Energy to turn radioactive waste from the World War II nuclear era and convert it into harmless glass.

Consuelo also acts as an advisor to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  In this role, she reviews vessel integrity and provides monthly reports to the Commission, ensuring the continuing safety of our nuclear reactors.  She also works with the Department of Homeland Security where she is responsible for the configuration management of the system equipment and software for “portals” or “checkpoints” being established along the borders.  These “portals” detect radioactive materials including weapons of mass destruction.

Consuelo has also worked on several robotic-oriented projects.  She contributed to a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)-funded project, GOAT (goes-over-all-terrain) where she performed stress analysis on robotic vehicle components and heat transfer calculations.

Consuelo is seen as an inspiring example for all Hispanic Engineers, PNNL staff and interns.  She is not only an asset to Batelle and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, but also her immediate community of Washington State and the security and well-being of our nation.

Beyond the time spent at PNNL, Consuelo lives a fulfilling, yet busy life at home.  She is happily married and has been blessed with three little boys in the last five years.  Consuelo is sincerely grateful for all the encouragement she has received from her coworkers, friends, and family during her journey as a young engineer and graduate student.

Consuelo received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Seattle University in Seattle, WA and earned her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University in Richland, WA
